Ember II

Ember II was my second commission for the Galaxy Casino in Macau in 2011. The mobile is made from stainless steel and hand dyed silk, and is companion piece to Ember I. I dyed the silk many different shades of red, from rich plumb through cadmium red and soft yellows with just a blush of pink. The mobile is very large; 2500mm high x 3500mm wide so I used thick steel wire, from 3.18mm to 10mm diameter. It was necessary to heat the steel to red hot in order to bend it into the links and curves of the mobile. After polishing the mobile 'leaves' were hooked into place, the links closed with some gentle persuasion from a hammer.

I made Ember II at Crawford's Casting with the ever patient assistance of Matt Crawford (see 'news' page). This commission was secured through ArtsCape.
